Altmuslimah.com, a place for comment on gender in Islam

“What makes Altmuslimah different is its combination of journalistic and academic perspectives with deeply private looks into our identity struggles vis-à-vis both Muslims and non-Muslims,” says Asma Uddin, Editor-in-Chief of Altmuslimah.com.
Altmuslimah.com provides a space for compelling comment on gender in Islam and a platform for intra- and inter-community dialogue on a wide variety of gender-related issues.

“What makes Altmuslimah different is its combination of journalistic and academic perspectives with deeply private looks into our identity struggles vis-à-vis both Muslims and non-Muslims,” says Asma Uddin, Editor-in-Chief of Altmuslimah.com.

The online newsmagazine is a combination of analysis and personal stories. “By uncovering the stories of a wide cross-section of men and women in the community, the gender issues that affect both men and women will come into sharper focus”, say the editors.

Altmuslimah.com encourages readers to submit pieces (videos, podcasts, articles, fiction, photography, art, and blogs) that touch upon Muslim identity formation; gender relations and the construction of sexuality; and/or the intersection of gender and society, economics, politics, and culture.

Uddin recalls the importance of creating Altmuslimah.com on the Launch Day post, “From watching my grandmother shrivel away in her polygamous marriage to suffering injustices of my own in the context of personal relationships with men, I have dealt with the issues first-hand. And I am grateful for those tribulations, as they gave me an inside look into real suffering. You can never really understand a struggle without having partaken in it to some degree.”

Altmuslimah aims to add depth and dimension to mainstream discussion of gender-in-Islam, says Uddin. Through personal narratives and probing analysis by Muslims and non-Muslims, they hope that their articles and multimedia content can both shed light on the gender issues that exist in our community, and also reveal possible solutions.
