News briefs for week of June 15, 2009

This week, women on the front lines of Iran’s post-election protests, the French consider a burka ban, and a Muslim waitress in Britain who refused to wear a revealing dress for her job (and was awarded £3000) is caught wearing one on Facebook.
France’s government is to consider banning the burka and other Islamic clothing which a French Parliamentarian claims is “like a moving prison.”

Women are on the front lines on the streets and blogosphere in Iran’s biggest demonstrations since the 1979 Islamic Revolution to protest President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s re-election.

Demand for modest swim wear is on the rise amongst Muslim and Orthodox Jewish women.

Muslim cocktail waitress, Fata Lemes, who refused to wear a revealing red dress at work because it made her “feel like a prostitute,” receives £3000 in compensation. Later, photos from social networking site Facebook emerged of Lemes in a revealing, low cut top which resulted in what some call “burka rage.”
