I am Iraq

even though I was not;
born there and my ancestors;
are not from Iraq;
I am walking to Karbala;
every day of my life
When I got married
I got married to Iraq
when I gave birth
to our twin baby boys
I gave birth to Iraq

I am Iraq

even though I was not
born there and my ancestors
are not from Iraq
I am walking to Karbala
every day of my life

I am Iraq

I am the one pursued
by the suicide bombers
who desire the eradication
of every cryer for Imam Hussein
and adherent to Muhammad’s progeny

I am Iraq

I pray five times a day
I fast in the month of Ramadan
I eat only that which is lawful
I dress myself modestly
why hurt yourself, O misguided one?

I am Iraq

I walk tall, calling for Hussein
I feel so small, crying for Zaynab
I would hug you as my sister
if I met you in the street
and you would do me this favor

I am Iraq

If you explode us with your bombs
while we’re paying passionate respects
to the beloved Grandson of Muhammad
you are the one on the wrong side
O sister, who wears the exploding shroud

I am Iraq
