EThe Buxton Initiative and AltMuslimah invite you to attend a series of roundtables:

“Living Gender, Living Faith”

Exploring the Intersection

· How are men and women from various faiths responding to the hook-up culture?

· What are the various ways gender roles in marriage are being negotiated?

· Are there common struggles across faith lines to find suitable marital partners? What are some solutions?

Gender is a topic relevant to all spheres of life, from the courtroom to the bedroom, workplace to worship centers. The Buxton Initiative and AltMuslimah aim to provide a space for people to share their stories and raise questions as they negotiate issues of gender and religion.

In February, March, and April of 2011, the Buxton Initiative will host a series of roundtables on topics such as gender roles, relationships and sexuality, and other issues that pertain to gender in the context of religion. 5 to 10 participants each from Muslim, Jewish, and Christian backgrounds will participate in each roundtable, culminating in a retreat in May. Participants will have an opportunity to write a 500-word piece for AltMuslimah’s AltVoices section, with the potential for publication on the Washington Post’s On Faith blog. The retreat will be open to those who regularly participate in the roundtables and contribute written pieces to Altmuslimah. This series is open to both women and men, and we’re looking to have at least 50% of the participants be men.

To kick off this series, we will be hosting An Interfaith Social on January 31st at 6:30pm. Folks will be able to network and learn more about the series. This event will be held at The Case Foundation, 1717 Rhode Island Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20036. For more information and to RSVP, please contact sara.aceves@buxtoninitiative.org.
