News.com.au speaks with Siham Karra-Hassan who was just 15-years-old when her older brother took to her a public pool in western Sydney to teach her to to swim.

She jumped in, excited, wearing a cotton shirt and trousers only to be told a few seconds later by a lifeguard that she had to exit the pool because she wasn’t properly dressed.

“It was the most embarrassing moment of my life,” she said.

Karra-Hassan told the website that she didn’t enter a pool again for the next 20 years.

“And then came the burkini, and it changed my life,” said Karra-Hassan, who came to Australia when she was three. “It allowed me to go to the pool again. I learned swimming at the age of 35.”

Now, thanks to the two-piece swimsuit that covers the full body (known as the burkini), swimming has become part of her regular exercise regime, helping her fight postnatal depression.
