Vox writer Jenée Desmond-Harris spoke with nine Muslim Americans about how misunderstanding, stereotypes and hateful rhetoric about Islam has affected their lives in the 15 years since 9/11.

“Their experiences vary with age, race, geography, and the visibility of their faith,” Desmond-Harris writes. “Some live in daily awareness of dirty looks, rude comments, and constant fear of violent retaliation. Others have pursued careers in activism or processed their questions through work in academia. A few make it their mission to change minds about Islam through daily interpersonal interactions, and most keep a careful eye on political rhetoric as a powerful shaper of the country’s climate.”

According to BuzzFeed News a British hajj charity is calling on the government to improve health and safety education among pilgrims. This year 25,000 British Muslims embarked on the Islamic pilgrimage in Mecca.

Khalid Pervez, the general secretary of the Association of British Hujjaj, a charity centered on promoting safety at hajj, told BuzzFeed News that more needed to be done to distribute information effectively among those expecting to join the pilgrimage.

“We need more planning, relief, and more awareness of health and safety issues, how we should protect ourselves while in Saudi Arabia while we are performing the hajj,” Pervez said. “Unfortunately even the authorities are not giving much information and they should do something to raise awareness among prospective hajj pilgrims when they go for hajj. We keep putting pressure on government authorities. They must do something to educate people.”

The Daily Best writer Nancy A. Youssef writes about the makeshift mosque inside the Pentagon Memorial Chapel which sits just a few feet away from where the plane struck the building 15 years ago.

Muslims service members this Friday, as they do every Friday, gathered for jum’ah.

“Their answer to the Islamic call to prayer was also an answer to the idea that being an American patriot and Muslim are mutually exclusive …” Youssef writes. “The makeshift mosque is imbued with reminders of the evils done in the name of a radical, hijacked form of Islam, and of the Muslims who reject it.”

5. Ford Foundation #InequalityIs

The Ford Foundation writes, “Linda Sarsour of the grantee organization Arab American Association of New York discusses the issues American Muslims face and how equality is a place where every person can be proud of and celebrated for the complexities of their background.”
