The Huffington Post culture writer Maddie Crum writes, “In filmmaking, gender parity developments weren’t as bleak. In January, The New York Times reported an uptick in films directed by women; in 2015, nine percent of top-grossing films had women at the helm, a two percent increase from the previous year. It’s small, but it’s something. No one ever said progress would come in floods, or even a steady stream

We talked with several of them this year, ranging from household names like Sally Field to directors toiling away at short filmmaking, hoping to secure feature-length funding. Below is a sampling of takeaways on how to achieve gender equality in the film industry, culled from some of our favorite 2016 interviews and profiles.”

“In the backseat of one of those green or navy old Mercedes-Benz taxis sits singer and songwriter Yasmine Hamdan, listening to the driver’s tales from Beirut’s diverse neighborhoods, engaging in serious and not so serious political discussions, and taking notes of those amusing statements that transpire in the rickety car,” writes CNN’s Basma Atassi. “An icon of underground music across the Arab world, 40-year-old Hamdan says that a number of her alternative electro-pop songs are inspired by those taxi rides.”

“When I go to Beirut I don’t drive. It’s traumatizing to drive there,” the Paris-based Lebanese-born artist told CNN at the backstage of her performance in Dubai in December.”In the Arab world, people don’t mix much. Taxi drivers have all kinds of people getting in their cars. So they give a sense of the city and its vibes.”
