Is Uber Safe? Tips For Muslim Women

Uber is a popular ride-hailing app, but numerous criticisms of passenger safety have come to light over the past few years. For example, at least  103 Uber drivers have been accused of sexually assaulting or abusing passengers in the last four years, a report by CNN found. Uber safety is therefore naturally a  primary concern for Muslim women. Using common sense and taking correct safety measures can help ensure you have a safe, positive Uber experience.

Know your driver
The Uber app publishes details of your driver, including, their photo, name, vehicle, and license plate.  Recently, a man was found guilty of posing as an Uber driver and harming two women in his car. So, before you get into your ride, make sure it’s the right one. You should also check your driver’s rating on the Uber app. If your driver has a low rating, cancel and call a different one. It’s also important to in turn give honest rating, which reflects your personal Uber experience as a Muslim woman. This will give future riders the information they need to pick the right driver and stay safe. Negative feedback will be followed-up by Uber’s support team.

New safety features
Uber is currently implementing new safety features to better protect passengers. An optional PIN verification system means the driver will need to get a PIN code from the rider before the ride starts. The driver enters the PIN and if it’s the right car, you’ll get a notification on your phone telling you. Additionally, riders can now text 9-1-1 directly from the Uber app, which automatically sends your current location, destination, vehicle description, and license plate. You can also report safety issues during a ride.

Contact a lawyer
In addition to taking steps to maintain your safety, it’s also wise to be prepared for the worst case scenario. If you end up in an accident, it’s important to contact an  Uber accident lawyer. You may be able to sue Uber or the driver’s insurance company for compensation covering medical expenses, lost wages, pain, suffering, and other damages (Uber drivers are covered by $1 million in total). Trying  cases of discrimination and mistreatment of passengers can be trickier due to lack of hard evidence. If you experience racism or sexism, you should report the incident to Uber.
On the whole, Uber is a safe, convenient method of transport for Muslim women. However, getting into any car always comes with risks. Taking sensible steps to stay as safe as possible can ensure you have a positive Uber experience.
