Why I cover up
AltCatholicah and AltMuslimah have recently formed AltVentures Media, a partnership which seeks to elevate the voices of women of faith in society, as well as to raise awareness across religions of the various commonalities and differences religions have with regards to gender issues. One such issue is modesty. Here is a Jewish perspective on a topic that is of great importance in both the Muslim and Catholic community. ()

No fear of flying
In this piece, the editor of AltCatholicah - AltMuslimah's partner site - explains the site's mission to a Catholic audience.
As a little girl, I found it infinitely frustrating that I could not fly. Sure, people can fly in planes, but we can’t fly. It took me a couple of decades to gradually discover that, in fact, humans can fly. Writing is flying. Flying looks like this: keyboard before you, wrist arched from the weight of an eager index finger hovering above a letter. Any letter. Lower and click. And you’re off! ()

What is Altcatholicah?
As I write this, I have Pentecost on my mind. The image of crimson calla lilies curling like flames at the feet of a statue of Our Lady in my local parish, her gaze turned downward, remains with me still. Mary, full of grace. Mary, on fire. Images such as this bring me back to the questions that have led me to create this web magazine: What does it mean to be a Catholic woman? What does it mean to simultaneously embody the graceful obedience of the Mother of the Church and the flame-like fervor of her Magnificat? ()

Exploring the dangers of excessive sentimentality
Women are in love with love. Particularly around Valentine’s Day and further into the spring, many women find themselves dreaming of a romance that will solve all of life’s ills and provide their heart’s desire. It doesn’t stop with Valentine’s Day. Women are by far the largest consumers of chick-flicks and romance novels. ()

  Contraception
The biology of marriage
When I did a search for Professor Robert P. George, Ryan Anderson, and Sherif Girgis’ recent essay “What is Marriage?” for the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, I couldn’t help but notice the Google advertisements that appeared on my sidebar. The first touted “Gay Marriage in D.C.” The second offered guidance on how to “Become a Marriage Therapist.” The third, and most disconcerting, advertised for “Beautiful Russian Girls Seeking Marriage in USA.” ()

Living Gender, Living Faith
Gender is a topic relevant to all spheres of life from the courtroom to the bedroom, workplace to worship centers. The Buxton Initiative and AltMuslimah aim to provide a space for people to share their stories and raise questions as they negotiate issues of gender and religion. To kick off this program, we will be hosting An Interfaith Social on January 31st at 6:30pm at The Case Foundation, 1717 Rhode Island Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20036. ()

Emotional immodesty on Facebook: a Christian perspective
Everybody loves to complain about Facebook. A constantly changing layout and interface. An addictive waste of time. And, most recently, Facebook has provoked an outcry from users over the complicated and ever-changing privacy settings. Facebook founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg responded recently to these latest complaints in a Washington Post op-ed, and in his defense of Facebook, articulated the “few simple ideas” upon which it was built. “People want to share and stay connected with their friends and the people around them... If people share more, the world will become more open and connected. And a world that’s more open and connected is a better world. These are still our core principles today.” ()

  Modesty
Grace in all faiths
Somewhere in the back of a dress shop, a heap of lace, buttons, and silk sits quietly on a table. Over the next couple of months, it will come together by the delicate hands of seamstresses to become the dress I will wear on my wedding day. I am having my dress handmade, because I discovered that finding a modest bridal gown is a rather impossible feat these days. After looking at dress after dress online and pushing back hanger after hanger at every nearby bridal store, I got the message: strapless and plunging are in, covering up on one’s wedding day is not.   Muslim-Jewish Reflections
Zuleikha in the Qur’an and in the Bible
In August, four scholars and a small group of Jewish and Muslim emerging religious leaders met to discuss the story of Joseph in the Qur’an and in the Bible. Here are four reflections, by two Muslim women and two Jewish women, about the significance of Zuleikha in the story and in their respective traditions. ()

  Clothing
Wardrobe!
As part of Altmuslimah's efforts to explore gender themes that Islam has in common with other faiths, the star of ‘Blossom,’ Mayim Bialik, reflects here on how her Jewish faith and its concept of modesty (tzniut) changed the way she dresses. ()
