Nadia Mohammad
Nadia is Associate Editor at Altmuslimah. Her articles on faith, feminism and politics are often featured on Altmuslimah@On Faith at The Washington Post.

Growing up as a Pakistani-South African American Muslim in suburban New Jersey, Nadia spent much of her childhood thinking she was too ‘Desi’ until she moved to Pakistan and learned she was too American. Returning home to the US with this new perspective she delved into the world of South Asian and Muslim American media and civil-rights activism.

Nadia is also the Associate Editor for Elan, a leading Muslim lifestyles magazine, and is a contributing writer for the South Asian lifestyle e-zine, Divanee.com.

Nadia holds a BA in Communications and Political Science from Cedar Crest College and a JD from Loyola University Chicago School of Law. An avid baker, she continues to believe in the values of justice and equality with chai and cupcakes for all.

Rally against Raymond Kelly & Paul Browne
NYPD: Spies, lies and propaganda films
New York City area community activists will be rallying this afternoon demanding the resignation of Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and NYPD spokesperson, Paul Browne. They are also demanding independent community oversight of the NYPD as a series of Associated Press and New York Times reports have alleged that under Kelly the department not only overstepped legal and ethical boundaries by spying on its citizens, it may have done so without federal approval and its actions were based on institutionalized religious and racial discrimination. Amongst the evidence provided is Kelly’s participation in an anti-Muslim propaganda film The Third Jihad, a report that the film was used to train police officers and leaked documents indicating covert operations to spy on area Muslims. Jezebel Perspective of Muslim Women
Today in bad humor…
As a frequent Jezebel reader and an editor for an e-zine that focuses on gender and sexuality in the Muslim world, AltMuslimah, I usually enjoy reading the witty banter on Jezebel. The Altmuslimah staff often shares the commentary offered on Jezebel with our Facebook and Twitter followers. It has become more apparent, however, that when it comes to discussing topics relating to Muslim women, Jezebel writers, disappointingly, do not have a real grasp of the issues, though they seem to think they do. Imams
The rise of the American ‘rockstar’ imams
R-O-C-K-S-T-A-R, is what I thought when I first saw Sheikh Hamza Yusuf speak at a Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) conference in Chicago. I was in awe, not just of his words, but by size of the crowd. This was not your average local halaqah (gathering) – this was a crowd of thousands who had traveled from all over the United States to attend the conference and to see Yusuf. (No comments)

Occupy Wall Street
I am the 99 percent. Now what?

She will be publishing her findings and observations in a series of articles. This introduction piece includes her personal reflections and background on OWS. Women's rights
The politics of fashion
Last week AltMuslimah explored feminism and faith in relation to patriarchal movements, and concluded that it is not possible for women of any faith to thoroughly enjoy their God-given rights in a society where "God" is replaced with "men." Saudi Arabia is perhaps the quintessential example of the modern display of faith gone awry when religion is defined by men. (No comments)

Patriarchy
“Stay At Home Daughters”: New age feminists or just plain lazy?
"Stay At Home Daughters" sounds like a slogan for Wahhabi Islam, but is actually an extension of the American Christian Patriarchy Movement. Stay-At-Home-Daughters (SAHD) encourages young women to relinquish higher education and employment outside of the home and devote themselves to their fathers until they become wives and mothers. Claims by writers such as Kathryn Joyce, author of Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement, that thousands of young women reject feminism in favor of patriarchal complementarianism is intriguing, to say the least. Marriage
Part 3 of the debate: Should Muslim women be able to marry non-Muslim men?
When Huma Abedin, aide to Hilary Clinton, married Anthony Weiner, New York Congressman, it sent tongues wagging in the Muslim community. She did the unthinkable, the ultimate taboo for a good Muslim girl from a good Muslim family – she married a Jew… and he did not convert. O-M-G. The question that makes even the most open-minded Imams squirm was revived – Can a Muslim woman marry a non-Muslim man? The answer in all the major schools of thought has traditionally been a resounding NO. Absolutely, not. Not ever. Haraam, sister. (15 comments)

Fort Hood Killing
Date me, I’m a racist
When both the White House and U.S. Army advised everyone not to jump to conclusions on the Fort Hood shootings, many government officials and journalists claimed that political correctness should not impede the truth. Some said the Muslim community was not condemning the incident vociferously enough. Others claimed that the Muslim community was overcompensating by being too apologetic. Talk about mixed signals!
